Thickness is the biggest lever on both tonnage and durability. Here are typical planning values by project type — and the factors that should move them.

Typical planning thicknesses

These are common compacted planning values for the asphalt surface layer. They are starting points for a conversation with a contractor, not a structural design:

Surface vs base: two different jobs

The surface is the wearing course — smooth, dense, and sealed against water. The base (compacted crushed aggregate) spreads load into the subgrade and drains water away. Most premature failures are base or drainage problems showing up through the surface, which is why skimping on base to save on asphalt usually costs more later.

What should move your thickness

  • Subgrade soil — weak or clay soils need a thicker base, not necessarily thicker asphalt.
  • Drainage — water under pavement is the #1 killer; grading and base matter more than an extra inch of surface.
  • Traffic — heavier and more frequent loads drive thickness up, especially trucks.
  • Climate — freeze-thaw cycles and soft summer heat both argue for a sturdier section.
  • Existing surface — an overlay on sound existing asphalt can be thinner than a full rebuild.

Lift thickness matters too

Asphalt is placed in "lifts," and each lift has a practical maximum (often around 3–4 inches) for proper compaction. A 6-inch surface isn't one pour — it's two or more lifts. If a quote seems thin or thick, ask how many lifts are planned and how each will be compacted.
