The single most important thing to know about asphalt pricing on this site: your local price is the primary input, and public data is never dressed up as a residential quote.

Why we don't print a "national average price"

Asphalt prices vary widely by region, mix design, aggregate availability, and crude-oil markets. Any single number we printed would be wrong for most readers and would go stale quickly. So the calculators ask foryour per-ton quote from a local plant, and every dollar figure you see is built from numbers you entered.

Typical US planning bands (reference only)

The calculators show two broad planning bands so you can sanity-check a quote before you call suppliers. They are not a claim to a precise national average, and they never feed the calculation — every dollar in your estimate still comes from the price you enter.

  • Material only (plant pickup): about $40–$130 per short ton across the cited consumer guides.
  • Installed (typical residential): about $5–$15 per square foot. This is a project-price planning band, not a material price converted per ton.

The bands were checked against current US cost guides on 2026-08-17 and are labeled with their basis, unit and retrieval date wherever they appear. Regional, mix-specific and seasonal variation is far wider than these bands suggest — treat them as a starting point, not a price.

We do not publish a national delivered-per-ton band. Haul distance, truck hours, minimum-load charges, plant delivery policy and legal payload make a single delivered figure especially misleading. Enter the actual delivery charge quoted for your job in the cost calculator.

How we classify public data

Where we do reference public data, each record carries four fields —source, date, basis, andunit — and is sorted into one of these categories. The categories are never mixed, and a build-time check enforces that the non-retail categories below can never feed a calculator's default price.

Price-band source register

Consumer cost guides are useful only for wide planning bands; they are not authoritative local quotes. The current displayed bands were cross-checked against the pages below on 2026-08-17. When sources disagree, the site keeps the range broad and asks for a local plant or contractor quote.

What we never claim

  • We do not claim to provide real-time, exact, or locally accurate prices.
  • We do not present a government binder index as your hot-mix price.
  • We do not present a public-project bid price as a residential quote.

Engineering and conversion references

The engineering numbers the calculators use — compacted density, the 110 lb/(sq yd·in) shorthand, coverage per ton, and typical truckloads — come from industry standards and public engineering references, not from marketing pages. Each row below lists the value, the source family, and how we use it.

These are planning conventions, not engineering specifications — the final word is the plant's mix design and the project's conditions. The methodology page shows how each value enters the calculation, and we record retrieval dates alongside any figure we add.

Retrieval notes

Official US data is free but has no single clean API. Some sources (FHWA EFL) block automated retrieval and must be downloaded manually with a real browser; others (FHWA NHCCI) are static HTML. When we add any of these to the site, we store the retrieval date and original URL alongside the figure, and we update on a quarterly, human-reviewed cadence rather than pretending to a live feed.
