Asphalt Cost per Square Foot Calculator
Installed asphalt in the US typically runs $5–15 per square foot (dated planning band). Material-only costs less — the exact figure is set by your local per-ton price and the compacted thickness. Enter both below for a project-specific number.

Advanced settings — mix density
Defaults to the standard dense-graded hot-mix density of 145 lb/ft³ (≈109 lb per sq yd per inch). Adjust only if you know your mix design.
Enter your local material price ($/short ton) to calculate the cost per square foot. Ask your asphalt plant for a per-ton quote — prices vary widely by region and mix.
Typical US price ranges (planning reference): Material only (plant pickup) $40–$130 per short ton · Installed (typical residential) $5–$15 per sq ft
| Basis | Typical range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Material only (plant pickup) | $40–$130 per short ton | Hot-mix asphalt at the plant before delivery; varies by region, mix design and order size. |
| Installed (typical residential) | $5–$15 per sq ft | Full installed consumer planning range; scope, removal, base prep and local conditions can move a real quote outside it. |

Asphalt cost per square foot at a glance
How much is asphalt per square foot? For standard dense-graded hot mix (145 lb/ft³) with a 5% waste allowance and an example material price of $120 per short ton, the per-square-foot cost by thickness is:
| Compacted thickness | Coverage weight (net) | Order quantity | Material cost / sq ft | Material cost / sq yd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 in | 18.1 lb/sq ft | 0.95 short tons / 100 sq ft | $1.14 | $10.26 |
| 2 in | 24.2 lb/sq ft | 1.27 short tons / 100 sq ft | $1.52 | $13.68 |
| 3 in | 36.3 lb/sq ft | 1.90 short tons / 100 sq ft | $2.28 | $20.52 |
| 4 in | 48.3 lb/sq ft | 2.54 short tons / 100 sq ft | $3.05 | $27.45 |
Order quantity and material cost include the 5% waste allowance; coverage weight is the net compacted weight. The square-yard figure is simply the per-square-foot cost times nine — some suppliers quote asphalt cost per square yard, so both units are shown. Replace the $120 example price with your plant's quote — asphalt price per square foot moves directly with the per-ton price, so a local number always beats an average. For what drives the per-ton figure, see our asphalt cost per ton guide.
From per square foot to your project total
Multiply the per-square-foot figure by your own area. For three common residential sizes at 3 inches thick, standard mix, and the example $120-per-ton price:
| Project size | Order quantity | Material cost | Installed planning band |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 sq ft (single-car driveway) | 7.6 short tons | $914 | $2,000–6,000 |
| 600 sq ft (two-car driveway) | 11.4 short tons | $1,370 | $3,000–9,000 |
| 1,000 sq ft (large driveway / small lot) | 19.0 short tons | $2,284 | $5,000–15,000 |
The installed band includes delivery, base preparation and labor — see the material vs installed guide before comparing it against the material column. Enter your actual area in the calculator above to get order tons and material cost for your project; the asphalt cost calculator itemizes the installed side line by line.
Why two per-square-foot quotes differ
Per-square-foot pricing feels like a standard unit, but five variables move it — which is why "asphalt cost per square foot" searches return such a wide spread:
- Thickness. The biggest lever — doubling the compacted thickness doubles the material per square foot. Two quotes at "per square foot" are only comparable at the same thickness.
- Project size. Mobilization, equipment and minimum charges are fixed costs. Spread over 1,000 sq ft they add little per square foot; on a 200 sq ft patch they dominate. Larger driveways genuinely cost less per square foot.
- Overlay vs tear-out. Paving over a sound existing surface skips demolition and most base work; removing old pavement first adds both.
- Access and shape. Tight access, slopes and irregular edges mean more handwork and more waste.
- Region. Published 2026 cost guides put installed asphalt lower in Texas and the Southeast, higher in the Northeast and on the West Coast. See data sources for the references.
When you collect quotes, put them on the same basis — same thickness, same scope, same square footage — before comparing the bottom lines. The quote checker reverse-checks what each proposal actually implies.
How the per-square-foot cost is calculated
The asphalt cost per square foot comes from the same compacted-density model as our asphalt calculator, applied to one square foot of area. Four steps, rounding only the final display:
tons per sq ft = weight per sq ft ÷ 2000
cost per sq ft = tons per sq ft × price/ton × (1 + waste)
Worked example at 3 inches (0.25 ft), standard 145 lb/ft³ mix, and $120 per short ton:
tons = 36.25 ÷ 2000 = 0.018125 tons/sq ft
cost = 0.018125 × $120 × 1.05 = $2.28 / sq ft
Thickness is the biggest lever: doubling the thickness doubles the cost per square foot. That is why two quotes for "asphalt per square foot" can differ so much — confirm the compacted thickness before comparing any two numbers.
Material-only vs installed, per square foot
The calculator above prices the material only — the hot mix itself, from your per-ton quote. It does not include delivery, base preparation, or paving labor. Once those are added, installed residential asphalt commonly lands in the $5–15 per square foot planning band shown beside the results.
Never compare a material-only per-square-foot number against an installed quote — that is the most common source of confusion. Our material vs installed cost guide explains the difference, and the asphalt cost calculator builds a full itemized estimate with delivery and installation.
Frequently asked questions
How much is asphalt per square foot?
Installed asphalt commonly runs $5–15 per square foot once delivery, base prep and labor are included. Material-only is less and depends on your per-ton price and thickness — at 3 inches with a $120-per-ton mix it works out to about $2.28 per square foot. Enter your own thickness and per-ton price above for a project-specific number.
How much does a square (100 sq ft) of asphalt cost?
At 3 inches thick with standard 145 lb/ft³ mix, one square (100 sq ft) needs about 1.90 short tons including a 5% waste allowance — roughly $228 in material at $120 per ton. The calculator shows order tons per 100 sq ft for any thickness you enter.
How much is asphalt per cubic yard?
One cubic yard of compacted standard hot mix weighs about 1.96 short tons (27 cu ft × 145 lb/ft³). At $120 per ton that is about $235 per cubic yard of material. Per-square-foot cost is usually a more useful unit, because it already accounts for thickness.
Why do per-square-foot quotes vary so much?
Thickness, mix density, the per-ton price in your region, delivery distance, and whether the quote is material-only or installed all change the number. Small or hard-to-access jobs also carry minimum charges. Compare quotes only at the same thickness and the same price basis — our quote checker helps put two proposals on the same footing.
How much is blacktop per square foot?
"Blacktop" is a common regional name for the same hot-mix asphalt, so blacktop cost per square foot works out exactly the same way — thickness × density × price-per-ton. There is no separate blacktop price per square foot; the blacktop cost per sq ft is the asphalt figure above. Use whatever term your supplier uses, but compare the actual per-ton price and thickness, not the label.
